Discussions led by Ms. Kathryn Smith

Prohibition, the period when a constitutional amendment banned the production, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages in America, is sometimes seen as a colorful time of flappers and bootleggers. But the dark side of this period, 1920 -1933, was very dark indeed. Using her book "Baptists and Bootleggers: A Prohibition Expedition Through the South...with Cocktail Recipes," Kathryn Smith will take the class through the events leading to Prohibition, the Prohibition period itself, and the aftermath, as seen through the prism of the South. Subjects to be covered include moonshining in the Dark Corner of S.C., the birth of stock car racing in the Georgia mountains, rum-running on the Florida coast, and the many places master gangster Al Capone was said to have laid his head in the South, from his mansion in Miami Beach to the federal penitentiary in Atlanta.

Copies of Ms. Smith's book will be available for purchase for $30. Please let Jane know you would like one reserved for you, and we will reach out to Ms. Smith on your behalf.
